French Language
- Beginners, Intermediates, and Advanced
La Ferme has courses for students at all levels. Here's what we think
is important for each of these levels:
French Language
- Beginners
Beginners need to
-
- Learn to hear the language.
- Acquire good pronunciation habits.
- Develop the basic communication skills necessary to deal with
real life survival situations.
- Read menus and simple notices and instructions.
- Write well enough to fill out forms.
- Learn elementary grammar, syntax and vocabulary.
- Begin to grasp the overall structure and philosophy of the language.
It is extremely
difficult for beginners or near beginners to learn all this without
getting frequent help from a live teacher. Once they have acquired
the essential skills, however, they can often make real progress
working on their own. A residential course at La Ferme provides complete
immersion with experienced teachers, and enables the beginner to build
a firm foundation in French in the shortest possible time.

French Language
- Intermediates
Intermediates usually
need to -
- Unlearn bad habits in pronunciation and grammar.
- Improve social conversational skills in one-to-one and small group
situations.
- Read popular newspapers, and texts of similar difficulty.
- Write e-mail messages and simple personal and business letters.
- Make substantial progress toward a mastery of French grammar.
- Expand their vocabularies and knowledge of syntax.
- Become aware of relationships between French language and culture.
Although intermediates can make substantial progress studying on
their own or in traditional class situations, they often get stuck
on learning plateaus, and need the vigorous boost which one of our
immersion courses provides. Intermediates frequently complain that
they have difficulty in understanding what they hear, a problem which
can usually be overcome with a week or two of constant exposure to
spoken French at La Ferme.

French Language
- Advanced
Advanced students
will want to develop their communicative skills in many directions.
They still have room for improvement in grammar and vocabulary, but
often they are interested in pursuing some specialized interest, either
cultural or professional. The teacher does not necessarily need to
have a profound expertise in the same specialty. Although our teachers
have considerable experience in teaching business and professional
courses, their broad general culture and lively curiosity are equally
important as they help advanced students express themselves clearly
on the wide variety of subjects which may interest them.
