Herbert was one of our many "retired" students. We used quotation marks because Herbert remains full of plans and projects, one of which is improving his long dormant French. Like many of our students, he learned French some years ago in school. Since then he has maintained his affection for the French language and people, and now that he is retired, he has time to learn, travel and practice.

Herbert is a very effective communicator in English. He had to be, because he was Chief of Police in a large American city before he retired. As his first step toward becoming an effective communicator in French, he chose to take a two-week residential course at La Ferme. Herbert made good progress during these two weeks. He expanded his active vocabulary and improved his understanding of spoken French. He is now able to carry on fairly complex conversations with French people in small groups or one-to-one situations.

We encourage Herbert to continue his studies and practice of French, and hope he will keep his promise to come back and see us at La Ferme.
